Denomination of Middle Tension cables


Middle Tension cables have a designation according to norm. This denomination is composed of a set of letters and numbers, each one with a meaning detailed below.

The designation of the cables refers to a series of characteristics of the product (materials, nominal tensions, etc.) that facilitate the buyer/installer the selection of the cable most suitable to his needs. The designation code used in Spain for Middle Tension cables is the following: (two examples are given):

X-VOLT RHZ1-OL (S) 12/20kV 1x150 K AL+H16

Cable type X-VOLT; Top commercial brand Cable for Middle Tension cables.
The first bloc (RHZ1 in the example) refers to the cable coatings, always from inside out. The letters mean:
RH : Radial field XLPE insulation.
HEPR: Radial field HEPR insulation.
DH: Radial field EPR insulation.

F: Steel bands armature.
FA: Aluminium bands armature.
M: Galvanized steel wire armature.
MA: Aluminium wire armature.

Z1 : Halogen free polyolephine.
V: PVC cover.

The second bloc (-OL (S) in the example) refers to the additional characteristics:

(in white) : cable without sealing.
-OL : Sealing length. simple (under cover)
-2OL : Double longitudinal sealing (in conductor and under cover).

(in white) : cable without special properties under fire conditions.
(S) : Security Cable, non-propagator of flame.
(AS) : High Security Cable, non-propagator of fire.

The third bloc (12/20kV 1x150 K AL+H16 in the example) refers to the tension assigned, to the conductor and to the metal screen:

Uo/U : Tension assigned, in kV.

nxS : nº and section of the conductors, in mm2.
(in white) : Class 2 rigid copper

K AL: Compact aluminium conductor

+H16: 16 mm2 copper wire screen
+H25: 25 mm2 copper wire screen

X-VOLT HEPRZ1 18/30kV 1x240 +H25

In this other example the description details: X-VOLT type cable is the commercial brand of the manufacturer – in this case Top Cable – for Medium Tension cables. HEPR insulation and radial field, halogen free polyolephine outside cover. Without water sealing or characteristics under fire conditions. Nominal tension 18/30 kV. Unipolar cable, 240 mm2 copper conductor. Concentric screen, of 25 Cu wires.
