class="ez-toc-section-end">

The first step to ensure safe cable installations is to have it installed by a qualified and authorised installer, with the necessary knowledge and expertise to carry out the work.

It is the cable installer’s responsibility to know the regulations in place within each territory in which the installation of a cable is carried out. A trained installer will have the knowledge to select the correct cable, understand applicable regulations, and minimise risks of malfunction.

PLANNING THE CABLE LAYOUT

One of the most important factors in a safe and efficient cable installation is the layout. Proper planning ensures that the cable travels the required distance while avoiding unnecessary complexity or damage.

Key considerations for cable layout include:

Distance and routing: Assess the path the cable must follow and any obstacles it may encounter.

Cable protection during installation: Use a roller with an appropriate width and smooth surface to prevent damage to the cable sheath.

Bending radius: A small reduction in the permitted bending radius may be considered only if the minimum cable temperature is at least 30ºC and bending is performed using a pre-formed roller.

Reel positioning for winding and unwinding: The reel should be elevated 10–15 cm and kept vertical. Avoid horizontal positioning, as it can cause single or double twists that may damage the cable.

Additional tips:

Plan the layout in advance to minimise sharp turns and unnecessary bends.

Mark the intended cable route clearly on-site to avoid accidental interference with other installations.

Ensure sufficient space for maintenance or future expansion along the cable route.

Proper planning at this stage reduces installation risks and ensures the cable performs reliably throughout its service life.

CABLE INSTALLATION: INDOOR AND OUTDOOR CONSIDERATIONS

Proper cable installation is essential for safety, reliability, and longevity of electrical systems. Whether cables are being installed indoors or outdoors, understanding the environmental and mechanical factors that affect them is crucial. The following sections provide guidance on key considerations and best practices for both indoor and outdoor installations.

OUTDOOR CONSIDERATIONS

There are different environmental aspects that must be taken into account when installing an electrical cable.

MOISTURE AND WATER

Moisture and water exposure are critical concerns. Any damage to the cable’s outer sheath during installation can allow water or humidity to enter, potentially causing malfunctions. Cable end protections should remain in place until installation is fully completed. If they are removed early and any damage is detected, it is recommended to inspect at least the first metre of the cable and, if necessary, cut and discard the damaged section.

TEMPERATURE

Temperature is another key factor. It is essential to know the minimum and maximum service, installation, and handling temperatures for the cable, which are typically provided in the cable’s technical data sheet. Ensuring the cable is not exposed to temperatures outside these ranges will prevent material degradation and performance issues.

FIRE PROTECTION

Fire protection must also be addressed. Verify that the cable complies with applicable legislation and, if needed, confirm its CPR regulation rating. Cables rated AS or AS+ offer the highest level of safety in case of fire, helping to protect both people and property while facilitating evacuation.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Consider other environmental factors such as chemical exposure, UV radiation, and physical impacts, and take appropriate protective measures to extend the cable’s service life.

MANAGING CABLE TENSION DURING INSTALLATION

The way a cable is installed, and the method used to pull it directly, determine the maximum safe pulling force. Exceeding this limit can damage the cable, either by causing immediate breakage or by reducing its service life.

SUPPORTED CABLE INSTALLATION

In the case of a supported cable installation (where the weight of the cable itself is in direct or indirect contact with the ground or subsoil over the entire length of the cable), the maximum tensile force on the conductor is calculated using this formula.

The maximum tensile strength takes into account a maximum permissible conductor elongation of 0.2%. In case of a multicore cable, the sum of all nominal conductor cross-sections is taken into account.

The tensile force can also be applied by means of a friction mechanism acting on the outer sheath. In this case, the maximum tensile force is calculated with this formula.

It must be verified that the tensile force on the outer sheath does not exceed the force calculated with the conductor cross-section. However, at Top Cable we do not recommend this method, as the tensile stress caused on the sheath material may, depending on the environmental conditions, lead to subsequent shrinkage of the sheath, causing future problems.

For single-core cables, we recommend that the total value of the tensile force should not exceed 2.5 times the maximum force of a single cable. In the case of cables laid in parallel the total tensile force should not exceed N-1 times the maximum value for a single core cable, where N is the number of parallel cables laid at the same time.

SELF-SUPPORTING INSTALLATION

Another type of installation is self-supporting (cables are installed in walls and ceilings, a few metres above the floor), where stress concentration in the cables must be avoided by placing them in natural positions before fixing them.

In case of spaced laying of single-core cables, plastic cable ties can be used to hold the cable (they can also be made of steel as long as there is no magnetic circuit on the single-core cable). It is important not to put excessive pressure on the cable with the cable tie so that the cable can undergo longitudinal and transverse expansion and contraction caused by thermal effects without damage.

OTHER CABLE INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS

To ensure a safe, reliable, and long-lasting cable installation, follow these key recommendations:

Adhere to the minimum bending radius specified for each cable to prevent internal damage.

Protect cables from vibrations, impacts, and physical stress during and after installation.

Mitigate exposure to chemicals or other corrosive agents that could degrade the cable materials.

Schedule regular inspections after installation to identify wear, damage, or potential issues early.

Keep the technical data sheet on-site for quick reference, ensuring that installation and handling guidelines are always accessible.

Additional tip: Document the installation process, including any deviations from standard procedures, to aid future maintenance or troubleshooting.

GET EXPERT ADVICE FOR YOUR CABLE INSTALLATION

Ensuring a safe and reliable cable installation can be complex, with many factors to consider, from routing and environmental conditions to tension and fire protection.
